Chicken Piri-Piri in Vilamoura

If you’re looking for traditional Portuguese cuisine, nothing is more authentic than peri-peri chicken. Piri-Piri Chicken (Portuguese spelling) originates from the fusion of Portuguese and African culinary traditions. The chicken is marinated, grilled and doused in a spicy sauce which gives it a distinctive taste. Usually served with French fries and salad. Despite the name there is always the option without peri-peri. The chilli sauce is added after the cooking so the waiters will always ask what you prefer. You can also request the sauce on the side and you can add as much or as little as you wish.

In the Algarve, you will also find what we call “Frango da Guia”. Basically, the difference between piri-piri chicken and Guia chicken, is the size of the chicken, Guia chicken is a very small chicken, which makes all the difference.

Guia is the name of a village in Albufeira where you can find the best authentic chicken restaurants – so much so, it has been dubbed the Capital of the Chicken in Portugal. There are numerous restaurantes in the village that specialise in this dish.
